Two lovely ladies have agreed to let me post their progress on our blog! Soon you will see the progression of an image consultant who is concerned about fine lines and wrinkles as well as a massage therapist with aging skin and weak capillaries.
If you have any questions for any of our models, please send them to me and I'll make sure they're part of the interviews!

Feedback From Allison
Allison took a few minutes to answer some of the questions I emailed her earlier in the week. She was out the door to a fun business trip in Chicago and said she'd send more information soon.
(I sent her with some Phaze 17 Rebalance to alternate with her regular moisturizer to help keep her hydrated in the windy city; it's slightly heavier than the Phaze 7 that she is currently using.)
How did the peel feel?
The first peel burned a little on the second layer and subsided quickly. I didn’t feel any discomfort at all after that.
Did you see any results after the first treatment?
I was really surprised because I could notice less redness almost immediately. I really expected to need a second peel before anything would happen due to the condition of my skin and the fact that nothing I have ever tried has done much of anything. There was a lot of flaking the first 2 days so I just kept repeating steps 2-4 and it was very controllable. My skin kept improving as I kept following my routine. It is easy to follow the steps and only takes a few minutes in the morning and at night. No more than a regular clense, tone, moisturize routine.
How did the second peel feel?
My second peel didn’t burn at all when applied. All I felt was equal to a toner application and it was gone as quickly. I did feel a little burning later that day and the next day. It felt like a mild sunburn, just slightly uncomfortable. I had a lot of peeling(also like I had gotten a sunburn) for about 4 days.
And the results?
There was even more reduction in redness and two of my sons told me I look like I am wearing makeup when I am not. Wow.

Just to show the great lengths I go to...
...to understand other treatments that are available on today's market.
Enjoy!

This post shows me getting an acupunture face lift. The things sticking out of my face are tiny needles.
It didn't hurt nearly as much as you would thing. I've had acupuncture before, so I'm familiar with how it "normally" feels. Aside from a few tender spots, the experience was fairly relaxing. (Be prepared for some of the needles, which are superficially inserted, to fall out. This startled me.)
The practicioner that I visited also does microcurrent. We're going to discuss making her services available for my clients as well.

Guest Speaker at SSMT
I was very flattered to be invited as a guest speaker to the Sarasota School of Massage; my alma mater. I honestly think that this is one of the best school in the area and anyone thinking of becoming a massage therapist should make sure that they at least take a tour and talk to the reps there. Joe and Stephanie run the school because they are passionate about the healing work of massage. And yes, it is a business, but it's run on so much more of a personal level than any other program out there.
The are having their round-table discussion tomorrow and have invited me to share the little wisdom that I have with students who are about to graduate. I jumped at the chance. I hope I can pass on at least one thing to the newbies. It's such an exciting time!

February Newsletter
Lizz to host Jaw Pain workshop
Save this date: 3/27/07 7:00pm
Jaw Pain Workshop – Thursday, March 27 7:00pm-8:30pm $30 individual/$50 couple
I will be hosting a workshop in March. We have found that over eighty percent of our neck pain and headache clients have some component of jaw tension. And many clients come to us with jaw pain as their main concern.
Jay and I started specializing in treating headaches, neck pain, and TMJ dysfunction approximately three years ago. We both suffered from all three! Sometimes the best therapist is one who can understand what you’re going through.
Learn how to effectively and gently treat jaw pain. Each person will receive a brief treatment to help them locate the correct points. Discussion and supervised practice will follow. There will be time for couples to work on each other as well.
This is an excellent opportunity for those of you who cannot afford to come in for a full treatment and for those who will take the two minutes a day to give yourself relief.
Space is limited, so please call me to reserve your spot.

Myofascial Update
A new specialty for Lizz?
Since November I’ve been ecstatic about a massage modality called Myofascial Release. I’ve since had the opportunity to integrate my recent training in this technique into massages for my regular clients and the results have astounded me.
Each person reported that the massage felt great and was both pampering and relaxing. The results were increased mobility and flexibility, decreased pain, decreased tension, and an overall feeling of relaxation. Even some of my die-hard deep tissue clients that rely on heavier techniques for pain relief were converted!
I’ll be receiving more advanced training in this technique in both March and June, and hope to be able to make it to one of the 60-hour intensives sometime this year. This means I’ll be out of town for almost a month, but it will definitely be worth it!
Deep Tissue Treatments: Please call Jay
Jay loves this technique; Lizz is no longer offering it.
After a long, hard look at my strengths and weaknesses as a massage therapist, I have decided not to offer full body deep tissue massages. It’s not something that I enjoy doing or even receiving, and my body mechanics work against me. (I’m hyper-mobile and it’s very hard to give enough pressure and preserve my career at the same time.) There are so many other techniques that I would love to focus on and help my clients with.
Jay, on the other hand, is fantastic at deep tissue; loves to give it; and loves to receive it. (I swear, his idea of the perfect massage would be to have me stand on him and hit him with a sledgehammer! He adores giving and receiving deep work.)
Should you desire a deep tissue massage, please book those appointments with Jay in the future.
I will still be specializing in pain relief for headaches, neck pain, and TMJ dysfunction, as well as providing these services for other parts of the body. This message applies only to massages based around deep tissue, not massages that incorporate it as one technique in the toolbox.

Allison Week 1 and 3: Facial Before and After
The photograph on the left side of your screen is Allison's before photo. As you can see, I hadn't quite figured out the best lighting at our office! The next photo is from 14 days later. Sorry for the difference in lighting/focus. I should have better photos (from her uber-cool digital camera) up soon.
Notice that she has fewer "angry red" blemishes in the second photo. You can also see where the worst of her breakouts are in process of healing. While her skin is still red in spots, it's not as intense.

Her first treatment (given right after the first photo was taken) was a chemical peel. After analyzing her skin and discussing her concerns we prepped her skin. Once it was cleansed and prepared, a chemical peel solution from PCA Skin Clinical Care Products was applied.
The Ultra Peel I solution is part of PCA's extensive line of clinical care products. They are a favorite among dermatologists and plastic surgeons from light to medium-depth peels. (As a licensed facial specialist who is certified in chemical peels, I only use the lighter solutions.)
Ultra Peel I is appropriate for almost every skin type (including sensitive) and helps create a moderate to agressive level of exfoliation. Nourishing ingredients help treat everything from acne to sun damage to dehyrdation to pigment disorders and smoker's skin. As PCA says, "Overall, the final result will be plump, hydrated and ultra-soft skin."
While the Ultra Peel I is a TCA peel, it has very little discomfort (on a 10 scale her biggest number was about a three), and absolutely no downtime. This is very different from the "standard" TCA peel which usually creates significant discomfort and a short to moderate amount of downtime.
Next we applied a variety of serums that included enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins, and a veritable smorgasboard of "good stuff" (that's a technical term!) for the skin.
To strengthen her capilaries (to discourage future rosacea) and help encourage her acneic skin to heal, we focused on Vitamin C and Vitamin A. The A&C Synergy Serum happens to be one of my favorites. It has the added benefits of helping to control acne.
To further encourage exfoliation, I applied a layer of the Esthetique Peel. This is a description from PCA, "Its advanced formulation of L-lactic acid, L-retinol, and a host of polyphenols, antioxidants, vitamins, brightening ingredients and humectants, smoothes, tightens and improves the texture of skin. It also helps correct many types of skin discoloration."
We followed up with her moisturizers, including SPF. She received her after-care instructions.
For one week she used PCA's Post Peel Treatment System in the morning and evening. After one week I switched her to PCA's Breakout Control Treatment System.
The majority of flaking that she experienced was on the areas that were reddest in the photograph; chin, especially. The children enjoyed watching her face exfoliate and reported changes througout the week.
Her youngest boys reported that, "she had less breakouts, but she is still a little red." I was impressed! Perhaps there are some future estheticians in her family?
She came in this week for her second treatment. We snapped the Week 3 "after" photograph before starting.
She had me feel her face. It was incredibly smooth! This excited her a great deal as the texture had improved drastically. Even her husband noticed.
We repeated the exact same sequence but increased the number of layers of the chemical peel. She was able to handle the maximum number (4) for the TCA Peel. The largest discomfort number was a 1.5! (Her highest number fourteen days before was a 3, so it was even less though we doubled the number of layers.) That's how gentle it is. She said, "it pretty much feels like after I put toner on in the morning."
Stay tuned to find out how her second treatment improved her skin!

Allison's Back and Chest: Before Photos
We've prioritized our treatment plan for Allison. She's the mother of five children and simply doesn't have the time to spend getting ready in the morning or coming to the office all the time for treatments. We're focusing on her facial acne first and then will address her body problems.
In the meantime we've started her on the breakout control bar from PCA.
The breakout control bar is used in the shower just like regular soap. It helps to regulate sebum (oil), has antibacterial properties to discourage breakouts, softens the skin to help control buildup of skin cells, and has nourishing properties to help heal the skin.
Each time she comes in for a facial treatment I'll be taking pictures of her back and chest. PCA has a wonderful before & after photo library available to its licensed skin care providers, however I feel that showing current and potential clients that I've personally worked on speaks even stronger.
So here is her before photos of back and chest. Check back soon to see the updates.

Who is Allison?
Allison has been a dear friend of mine for about ten years. She and her husband live in the area with five wonderful children, who I have been lucky enough to watch grow from babes to (gasp!) teenagers. Many people confuse us for sisters. Her own mom once admitted that even she would assume that we were related, had she not been her mother.
We're both tall women and we've often swapped clothes in the past. Until a few years ago we both wore glasses (I had LASIK), and while the length and color of our hair changes frequently, we both have thick locks.
One thing that she has that I luckily don't is a pretty bad case of acne. My skin is prone to breakouts, and is very oily, but my worst breakout is probably her best day.
She has generously agreed to be my acne model. She is mostly concerned about her outbreaks on face and body, and is also concerned about the possibility for future rosacea, which runs strongly in her family.
You will see her featured on our blog with interviews, before and after photos, as well as updates each time she comes in for a session and photo shoot.
So that's Allison. If you see her walking around, be sure to tell her how great her skin is looking!

Welcome to our blog!
